CAGW Names Energy Sec. Steven Chu 2011 Porker of the Year

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) announced the results of its online poll for the 2011 Porker of the Year. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu won with 43 percent of the vote. Second place went to Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) with 27 percent, and third-place honors were awarded to Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon with 16 percent. Honorable mentions go out to Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis.

SustainAbility Releases Findings from Stakeholder Consultation on Roadmap to Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals

Today, SustainAbility, Inc. released the findings from its consultation of select stakeholders regarding the draft roadmap developed by six footwear and apparel brands to eliminate the discharge of hazardous chemicals from their supply chains by 2020.

The brands – adidas Group, C&A, H&M, Li Ning, NIKE, Inc. and PUMA, together published Joint Roadmap: Toward Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals on November 18, 2011. With the publication, the brands announced a period of stakeholder consultation to gather feedback that they believe will result in a stronger roadmap and help the industry realize this ambitious goal. The brands asked SustainAbility to conduct this consultation on their behalf.

Between November 2011 and January 2012, SustainAbility captured perspectives through phone interviews and email feedback from over 30 individuals representing a variety of stakeholder groups including academia, chemical companies, environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs), other apparel brands and regulatory agencies. SustainAbility conducted this consultation anonymously, but has identified the individuals and organizations with whom we consulted in the Appendix.

The findings are not an exhaustive list of every point of feedback raised, nor do they represent consensus. Rather, the document reflects SustainAbility’s perspective on the topics that most frequently and prominently came up in phone conversations and email feedback.

CAGW Releases Report on Federal Contractor Benefits

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) released a report outlining taxpayer liabilities for government contractors’ post-retirement benefits. The project was initiated after a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on the topic was released in April, 2011. The GAO analyzed payments by the Department of Energy (DOE) to contractors for the cost of underfunded pensions. DOE paid $ 3.64 billion to its contractors over the past 10 years, and GAO estimated that future DOE liabilities for these benefits could be $ 36.7 billion over the next 10 years.

CCAGW Supports reservation Moratorium Permanent

(Washington, DC) – Today the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) their enthusiastic support for the Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and the Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) efforts to establish a permanent extension Congress adopted the finding of the current moratorium on earmarks. On February 2, 2011, introduced Sens. McCaskill and Toomey amendment # 1472 to S. 2038, the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act.
